String Playing Day 2010

We shall hold another of these popular events this year, led once again by Bob Chasey from the BBC Philharmonic Orchestra.  It will be on Sunday 25th April 2010, from 10am to 4pm, in the Priory School, Longden Road, Shrewsbury SY3 9EE.  Please note this is a change of venue; a map can be sent if required.  The workshop is open to all violin, viola, cello and double bass players of a reasonably competent standard.  There is no performance involved, and players of modest ability will benefit from Bob’s tuition even if some of the music seems a little taxing.  There is a fee of £15.00 to cover the costs of putting on the event.

This year we shall be working on “Verklärte Nacht” by Schoenberg.  It is a long time since we last looked at this piece, and if you haven't come across it and are a little concerned by the type of music normally associated with this composer, please be assured that it is a warmly late-Romantic work, with luscious harmonies and full of feeling and passion, written well before he developed his twelve-tone method of composition.  Bob will bring other music to look at as well if time permits.

As those who have attended our previous Playing Days will know, Bob is a talented and experienced tutor who communicates his enthusiasm in a lively and humorous way.  As a professional orchestral violinist he knows at first hand the difficulties that face string players, and an invaluable feature of his coaching is the helpful advice he gives us on how he and his colleagues tackle the music.
