The Shrewsbury Symphony Orchestra enjoyed a wonderful Spring Concert on 6th April, performing Mahler's 'Lieder eines fahrenden Gesellen' ('Songs of a Wayfarer') in the Alington Hall with award-winning baritone Gareth Brynmor John. With our programme for 2022, we are keen to help redress the balance and recognise the work of some brilliant women composers - the Spring concert featured Lili Boulanger's wonderfully uplifting piece 'D'un Matin de Printemps'. The second half saw us take on the truly awesome Sibelius Second Symphony - and we all lived to tell the tale, with some stunning moments for each and every section! It was truly a concert to remember.
We began the evening with the National Anthem of Ukraine, which had been masterfully arranged for the orchestra by our double bassist and musical maestro Alan Atkin. All members of the orchestra wore a touch of blue and yellow in a show of support for the people of the Ukraine.
